St. Francis of Assisi had a particular affection for lambs, to whom Jesus Christ is often compared in the Sacred Scriptures because of His sweetness and gentle nature. One time, some people brought a lamb as a gift to St. Francis. The man of God admonished the little lamb to praise God and absolutely not to bother the brothers. The lamb, seemed to sense the piety of this man of God, and put these teachings into practice with great care. When she heard the brothers singing in the choir, she would enter the church, bend her knees, and emit tender harmonious bleats in front of the altar of the Virgin Mother of the Lamb, as if desirous of greeting her. During the celebration of the Mass, at the moment of the Elevation, she would bow down, knees bent, as if this devout little animal wished to reproach men of little faith for their irreverence and encourage devout men in their reverence towards the Blessed Sacrament." Coming before the Lord at the Holy Mass and Adoration, may we too, bow down and worship Him with reverence. May His gentleness touch our souls and illuminate our lives to be a gentle and humble light of God in the world.
