In 1010, heretical doctrines denying the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist began to spread throughout all of Europe in the eleventh century. The parish priest, Fr. Bernar Oliver, also doubted the reality of transubstantiation. While he was celebrating Mass, a miracle suddenly occurred: the wine in the chalice was converted into Blood and poured onto the altar cloth, spilling onto the floor. The Bishop of Urgell, St. Ermengol, informed of what had happened, immediately traveled to Ivorra, Spain, to confirm the facts in person. They were then reported directly to Pope Sergius IV. Today the sacred relics are preserved in a Gothic reliquary dating back to 1426 which contains the altar cloth stained with Blood and other relics given by Pope Sergius IV to St. Ermengol. In 1663, a sanctuary was built so the pilgrims could venerate the relics. Even today, each year on the second Sunday of Easter, an important feast is celebrated, known by the name La Santa Duda in reference to the "doubt" of Fr. Bernar Oliver, the pastor of Ivorra, and the great miracle. May you approach the Eucharist with great love and respect at Mass. May you come to worship Him in adoration. May He always live in your heart.
