When this young shepherd girl's mother died, her father married a woman who, from the very start, was hostile towards her because Germaine's face was disfigured by acne. The stepmother, who could not stand the sight of Germaine, convinced her husband to have Germaine live in the basement under the steps. The poor girl found herself so completely isolated in that basement that the mice were often her only companions. Germaine, however, was very close to the Lord and was particularly devoted to the Blessed Sacrament, which she received daily. Every day she would leave her sheep unattended to receive the Holy Eucharist, and miraculously the herd was never attacked by wolves. To reach the church, however, Germaine had to cross a stream called Courbet. One day heavy rain made the stream impossible to cross, but the young girl courageously decided to try anyway so she could receive Communion. Before stepping into the water, she made the sign of the cross, and as she was reciting her prayers the waters miraculously parted. The same thing happened on her way back as well. May the receiving of Jesus in the Eucharist become so important in our lives, that we would risk all to receive Him. May He be our love, our focus, and our desire everyday. Make the attendance of Mass and Adoration the most important part of your day.
