Charles Martel had committed a grave sin of incest with his sister, and stricken by remorse, decided to go to Provence and present himself to an abbot named Gilles, who was wellknown for his holiness, to seek absolution for this sin without actually confessing it and while keeping it a secret. St. Gilles was offering a Mass for the resolution of this situation when an angel appeared and placed himself near the altar, carrying in his hand a book in which the "unconfessable" sin was written. As the celebration continued, the writing in the book faded little by little until it completely disappeared, and Charles Martel found himself absolved. St. Gilles lived in the 8th-9th century. He has been invoked for help with difficult confessions. Let us not carry the burden of sin on our souls for years. Let us not fear going to confession to absolve our souls of the stain of sin, no matter how grave. Whether the sin is small (venial) or grave (mortal), frequent confession purifies the soul, extends grace to the soul, and aids us in our journey of holiness. Let us come in vast numbers to receive this Sacrament. For in it, we find the peace of Christ.
